Went to the beach today and got sunburned, I know big surprise. The beaches here are awesome. . . there are tons of restaurants, people walking around yelling the title of this post and Asian ladies offering massages. Our plan for today was to head to the beach and sleep off our hang-overs, then go watch the US World Cup game at a bar and have some dinner in a little while. Last night we went out with some of the Spanish guys from our floor. They seemed very surprised that we wanted to go out with them, because I guess all the other American students who have lived here have just kept to themselves. I was also asked if I wanted to have lunch with a couple other Spanish guys down in the cafeteria the other day. . . everybody here is so friendly. They spoke great English, so I didn't really get to practice my Spanish with them, but we ate and talked for about a half hour. They were curious about the differences between Spain and the States, and I found out some good places to watch the World Cup--it was a productive lunch. I am planning to go the the Parc Guell tomorrow, which is a park designed by Gaudi, so I should have some more pictures soon.
Observation of the day: 'Vale'
'Vale,' it seems, is the Spaniards' all-purpose word. I think it is roughly comparable to 'OK' in the States, but it seems like they use it for so much more. They use it to ask if you understand, to curse with, to greet people, when answering questions, when asking questions, if they agree with you, if they disagree with you or any other time they can. You hear it everywhere, and I am thinking about bringing it back with me and starting a new trend back home. Anyway, I wanted the persons coming to visit to know this ahead of time--just say 'Vale' and everybody will think you are Spanish.

I wonder if "vale" is like "opah" in Greek...SAGINAKI!
ReplyDeleteAnyway, the beach sounds awesome. You should be applying SPF 30 every 2-3 hours, I am really worried about you if you do not do that.
I hope you told those Spanish guys that all Americans aren't morbidly obese as well.
Stay safe, Evan! Can't wait until you get home with all my souvenirs!
So I figured I'd throw you some comments because you're clearly lacking diversity here. Joe and Patrick have monopolized your blog with their self proclaimed unattractive selves...they're clearly below you
ReplyDeleteFirst off, you will say "Vale" whenever you speak Spanish from now on, I promise. I haven't been able to drop it. It's just too easy and convenient. Plus it makes you sound like you know way more Spanish than you actually do...
In Reference to the previous post, Real Madrid won the first 5 UEFA Champions League titles largely because of Franco and his biased support. That's why I like them so much...I love dictators and their superiority complexes....Speaking of superiority complexes, don't let those arrogantly independent Catalalans fool you. They're not the only ones. Spain still has trouble reeling in the Basque region. In fact, Athletic Bilbao(Bilbao's soccer team), still only recruits and signs players from the Basque area...and they're really good
And stop hanging out with the girls...they are gross and have cooties(checked the spelling on Dictionary.com who defined it as a body louse, which is how I will refer to them from now on). Plus they only want one thing...everything
Sorry for the length, but I was bored and the remote doesn't work, so I only have one channel...unfortunately it happens to be on Tyler Perry's House of Pain...I feel like throwing up.
Oh, and spend all of your money so I'm not the poorest person in the house.
Love,
Will
Sounds like those Spanish guys were lookin for more than just a conversation at lunch if you know what i mean
ReplyDeleteAlthough I may be below you Milky, I don't understand what the big problem is with leaving witty messages to make you laugh. Doesn't seem like Will understands. He's clearly below even me.
ReplyDeleteI'm also wondering if all the sports coverage there is strictly soccer. Do they even acknowledge any other sports, such as rugby? Or any other American Sports?
Finally, who the hell is Will?
am I gonna have to turn off the comments or are you all gonna be civil?
ReplyDeleteJoe--Will is even more sarcastic than me, so don't take anything he says seriously
Hahaha...sorry Joe, no offense intended here. Listen to Evan. It was just my version of your "witty messages", however ill-aimed it may have been. Unfortunately I'm the type of person he hangs out with at school...probably a terrible influence

I am bored and avoiding homework at all costs, so I'm checkin' out your pictures/posts. I saw that you went to the beach the other day, I'm guessing near Barceloneta. Did you get the privilege of seeing "elephant" man? If you did I'm sure you know what I'm talking about, if not, well I'm sure you can figure it out.
ReplyDeleteP.S. Will is just mad because Real Madrid didn't win anything this year.

Hahaha i didn't think anyone was more sarcastic than milky.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, Harry Potter theme park in orlando opens up June 18th. I'm surprised you didn't schedule a flight to go for the opening. It looks awesome.
Looking forward to the next blog, have fun and don't become too cultured.
I'm not a friend but I thought I'd leave a comment, hope that is cool.
ReplyDeleteLiz says this sounds like I don't like you, but I'm just say'n I'm family. I like you okay?
